This ambitious venture is being championed by the university’s Chemical Engineering Department who will work closely with a team of international Petroleum Engineering experts from the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) as they develop Master and PhD programmes. The department’s Prof Daniel Ikhu-omoregbe says they are looking at a dual degree, where students will complete the research component at CPUT and the course work at UTM. Dual programmes at CPUT have already been implemented at the university in the areas of Satellite Systems Engineering and Business Information Systems and have proved a huge success.

Vice-Chancellor of UTM Prof Wahid Omar is positive about the collaboration and says CPUT and UTM have much in common, with both universities placing a high premium on innovation and technology.
“We want our students to create jobs and not just be job seekers,” says Omar.
Vice-Chancellor of CPUT, Dr Prins Nevhutalu says this initiative is just one of many championed by CPUT to provide solutions for South Africa and the rest of the continent.
“We are a young university that is really bullish about our future,” he says.
