Clinical Pathology II – BMI2606
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English,Afrikaans
Co-requisite: FIS1601
Purpose: This module will provide students with understanding of diseased cells and tissue. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to compare and contrast diseased cells to the structures and features of normal human cells.
Immunology – BMI2607
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: CHE1501 (or XHE1501) or CHE1502 (or XHE1502)
Purpose: This module will be useful to biology students interested in studying mechanisms of resistance to infections, an individual’s response to non-infectious foreign substances, as well as serology that are the practical methods used to detect micro-organisms. Students credited with this module can understand how cells within the immune system are activated to specifically kill certain cells, such as cancer cells, and to activate other immune cells to develop antibodies that recognizes and then respond to pathogens and other foreign substances in the body.
Biomedical Techniques – BMI3702
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: This practical module will provide students with a biomedical background of techniques applied in biomedical engineering and biotechnology. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to relate the theory and practice of biomedical techniques as conducted within the modern health sciences in the diagnosis and management of diseases.
Haematology – BMI3704
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the cellular components of blood and blood-forming tissues. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to apply the fundamental concepts of haematology that are required in the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases by identification of cells of the blood, bone marrow and immune tissues.
Virology – BMI3705
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the study of viruses and their involvement in disease pathogenesis. The knowledge gained from this module will equip students with principles related to virus classification, cultivation, and molecular morphogenesis.
Zoonoses – BMI3706
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the transmission of infectious disease between different animal species and humans. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to understand global burdens of disease and approaches to disease management.
Clinical Pathology III – BMI3707
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 7 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: BMI2603
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the diagnosis of diseases based on laboratory analysis of samples using tools of biochemistry, microbiology and haematology. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to understand concepts of diseases from a multi-dimensional perspective.
Clinical Biochemistry II – BMI2601
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: CHE1501 (or XHE1501), CHE1502 (or XHE1502)
Purpose: Features of DNA, RNA and proteins will be studied to show how DNA is stably inherited from one generation to the next, how proteins are produced using the sequence contained in RNA molecules and how the structure of these macromolecules contribute towards chromosomes, enzymes and normal cell structure.
Medical Epidemiology – BMI2602
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: STA1510 (or XTA1510)
Purpose: This module will be useful to students interested in studying the features of disease outbreaks that epidemiologists need to measure so as to provide the correct information regarding the appropriate treatment that should be provided to affected individuals and communities
Medical Microbiology – BMI2603
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: CHE1501 (or XHE1501), CHE1502 (or XHE1502)
Purpose: The purpose of this module is to study the capacity for microorganisms to cause disease and to introduce learners to features of pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and helminths that are of particular relevance to the South African situation.
Molecular Biology – BMI2604
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: CHE1501 (or XHE1501), CHE1502 (or XHE1502)
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the interaction between large molecules such as proteins, lipids, DNA and RNA. The knowledge gained from this module will enable students to understand how DNA, RNA and proteins are biosynthesized and contribute to life.
Pharmacology – BMI2605
Under Graduate Degree Semester module NQF level: 6 Credits: 12
Module presented in English
Co-requisite: CHE1501 (or XHE1501), CHE1502 (or XHE1502)
Purpose: This module will provide students with information on the interaction between drugs and biological systems and covers the study of drugs as well as the reactions by the body or a microbe to the drug.
