University Of Cape Town Engineering
University Of Cape Town Engineering, provided below are all the details about Engineering courses at University of Cape Town.
Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are offered by internationally acclaimed academics who are leaders in their fields.
Undergraduate studies
The department offers a fully integrated undergraduate civil engineering programme comprising up-to-date courses in all the traditional branches of civil engineering, such as structures, steel and concrete materials, geotechnics, hydraulics, water supply, wastewater treatment and transportation. UCT’s Bachelor of Science (Eng) degree in Civil Engineering is fully accredited with the Engineering Council of South Africa. The degree requires a minimum of four years of study. The disciplines of civil engineering at UCT are:
- Structural Engineering
- Structural Materials
- Urban Engineering
- Transport Studies
- Water Management
- Hydraulic Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
Postgraduate studies
The department offers a wide range of postgraduate studies which are linked to research in the fields of transport studies, concreted and materials structural integrity, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering and mechanics, urban water management and water quality engineering. Masters degree programmes are offered which comprise different levels of research versus course work, thus allowing students to educate themselves according to their particular strengths and career choices. Postgraduate courses vary in duration from one year to three years. Some courses are offered during the University semesters while others are offered during a block week.

Exciting new research in the department
Watch the video to find out more about research that Dr Dyllon Randall and his students are involved in to save water. Dr Dyllon is a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering.
For more information read the Greenovate Award for Students recycled-urine project and SAICE award for urine research project. Read the article that Dr Randall wrote for Daily Maverick on the value of urine in a water sensitive future.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Undergraduate studies
The undergraduate programme educates and trains engineers for a professional career, enabling them to think independently and to approach problems in a logical and confident manner. Skills are developed through group or team work and practical sessions that emphasise design. Great importance is placed on laboratory work in support of lecture material, and sophisticated pieces of apparatus are available to students. Design and manufacturing workshops are constantly adapting to new processes and techniques and laboratories have state-of-the-art computing facilities and equipment.
Postgraduate studies and research
Areas for postgraduate study and research include low-cost automation and robotics, structural impact, industrial engineering, systems engineering, project management, managing for performance improvement, non-destructive testing and evaluation, heat transfer and refrigeration, air and road vehicle dynamics, internal combustion engines, fatigue and fracture mechanics, residual stress, productivity and quality management, operations management, gas dynamics and fluid dynamics.
For detailed information please visit the Department of Mechanical Engineering website.
What is Mechanical Engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering dealing with the design, construction and use of systems and machines. It is one of the broadest and most versatile of the engineering professions and offers a wide scope in terms of career opportunities in all areas of industry. The Mechanical Engineer applies scientific principles to the design, development, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of the machines and systems that drive our world. Graduates are enabled to make a real difference in the world we live in.
Your UCT degree programme will teach you to think independently and approach problems with logic and confidence. You will work as a team and collaborate closely with professional colleagues from other backgrounds.
