Recognition of degrees
All our BEng degrees have been accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) for registration of graduates as Professional Engineers after acquiring the relevant experience in practice. These degrees are also recognised in the overseas countries signatory to the Washington Accord, such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, to name but a few.
In addition, Stellenbosch University’s engineering degrees generally provide direct admission to postgraduate study programmes in engineering at international universities. An engineering degree obtained at Stellenbosch University therefore literally opens the door to the world!
Research
The Faculty of Engineering is at the forefront of basic and applied research, and enjoys international recognition for its work. By focusing on cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research, the Faculty is experiencing strong growth in its research and postgraduate programmes. It has a long tradition of close cooperation with industry. Both contract research and consultation for industry are facilitated by various internal organisations in the five departments. Research activities are supported by highly competent staff, as well as world-class experimental laboratories, computational facilities and research infrastructure. We are fortunate in attracting students of the highest calibre . Postgraduate students can expect to be supervised by top-notch researchers and academics who share their knowledge in a stimulating and collegial environment.
Our Faculty is research-intensive and is one of the largest contributors to the research income of Stellenbosch University.
Community Interaction
The Faculty brings hope through a variety of community interaction projects that fall under social responsibility and contract research.
Contract research carried out in the research centers and institutes is closely interconnected with the activities of the five academic departments. Apart from the essential research expertise that is made available to industry, a substantial amount is ploughed back into the Faculty in the form of postgraduate bursaries, research material, apparatus, software, books and research travel.
The Faculty meets its social responsibilities through interaction with school communities with programmes such as TRAC and Maths Tutor programmes. TRAC, funded externally, provides learners country-wide the opportunity to get a better understanding of physical sciences by means of practical, experimental work. The national head office is based in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty also plays a role in the oversight of the programme. With the Maths Tutor Programme engineering students present tutorials to learners at local high schools in order to stimulate their interest in engineering and to help learners in obtaining better pass marks in this essential subject for engineering studies.
The Faculty of Engineering has several Outreach programmes to stimulate interest in science, engineering and technology.
The historic, picturesque town of Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch is a vibrant university town with a rich history. It is South Africa’s second oldest town after Cape Town, and was founded in 1679. The picturesque town has oak tree-lined streets and is surrounded by majestic mountains and vineyards. The Stellenbosch wine region is one of the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Stellenbosch is close to Cape Town , which allows students to have the best of both worlds: a small-town atmosphere, less than an hour’s drive from the exciting, vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Cape Town. For the nature lover there are hiking and biking trails, as well as rock climbing in the surrounding mountains. With the sea only 25 kilometers away, those who enjoy beautiful beaches, swimming, surfing, diving and other water sports, will be in their element!

The town of Stellenbosch and the University offer students a wide range of opportunities and excellent facilities for nearly all types of sport, cultural activities and student fun.
Programmes
The Faculty of Engineering has grown significantly over the past couple of years and has become an important contributor in alleviating the shortage of engineers in South Africa. The Faculty of Engineering is characterised by high quality teaching. Teaching and learning programmes are continually renewed to create better opportunities for effective learning and studying.
The Faculty draws a great number of top matriculants from all over the country and is proud of the achievements of its graduates. Where student success is concerned, the Faculty’s module success rate of 85% is higher than the SU average.
